An accident in a factory resulted in a man sustaining a serious fingers injury.

The man had an accident at work at Ribble Packaging’s Oldham site when the tops of two of his fingers were cut off. While using a cutting wheel in the factory, the worker attempted to remove waste cardboard from the machine, which had a faulty automatic safety switch, and received his injury.

The firm was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,769.50 after pleading guilty to an offence under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 at Trafford Magistrates Court.

Commenting on the case, Richard Clarke, Health and Safety Executive, said: “Safety switches are there for a reason. If they’re not functioning properly then employers are putting their staff at risk of serious injuries.”
