A worker left paralysed after an accident at Shell's Stanlow oil refinery
An employee sustained a broken back, two broken legs, a broken pelvis and other injuries as a result was left in a wheelchair after a container carrying 500kg of waste materials fell 30 feet on top of him.
The incident was caused by the materials being suspended above a walkway. Hertel UK installed the scaffolding and platforms used for the project. This included the boards around the lifting equipment, which became dislodged causing the container carrying waste materials to fall.
Shell UK Oil Products Ltd, who run the Cheshire site, Mr Rizzotti’s employer Dalprop Ltd (formerly SG Blair and Co) and sub contractor Hertel UK Ltd all admitted guilt for the accident and were fined at Warrington Crown Court on 4 January 2010.
