Reporting a Car Accident

If you are involved in car accident or other road traffic accident, as a driver, passenger or pedestrian you should make sure the accident is reported.
You should also gather as much information as possible at the scene as this will help you with your claim later on.

- Do not leave the scene of even a minor accident until full details have been exchanged between all involved and the accident has been reported to the police. The police may not attend a minor accident if no one is injured but you should still call to report it.
- If you haven't exchanged details at the time of the accident you should report the accident at a police station as soon as you can.
- Do not admit fault in the immediate aftermath of an accident, this will be decided by insurance companies and solicitors when the full information about the accident is known.
- Note down the name, address and contact details of everyone invovled in the accident.
- Take the Registration number and description of any cars or vehicles involved as well as the drivers insurance details. If the vehicle is a work vehicle also get the employers details and note down a description of the driver.
- Get the names and contact details of all witnesses to the accident.
- Write down details of how the accident happened, positions of vehicles and draw the accident and locations of important street furniture as soon as you can. Include details about the weather, visibility and street lighting and if headlights or indicators were used on any of the vehicles.
- Use your mobile phone, or a camera if you have one with you, to take photos of the scene and the vehicles involved.
- If you were injured in the accident and couldn't do this at the time of the accident, return to the scene when you can and make your notes.
- Call your insurance company and report that you have been involved in an accident.
